Foundation First.
Precision Hygiene.

Professional cleanings are more than just a "polish." We use clinical techniques to disrupt biofilm and remove calcified deposits that cause systemic inflammation, protecting both your smile and your heart health.

Hygiene Technology

Ultrasonic Scaling

High-frequency vibrations to shatter stubborn tartar.

Air Flow Therapy

Gentle removal of stains and biofilm using air-polishing.

Oral Cancer Screening

Integrated into every preventative exam.

Monitoring Gum Health

We measure the "pockets" between your teeth and gums to determine the level of care you need. These measurements (in millimeters) are the roadmap for our hygiene team.

1-3

Healthy. Gums are tight and pink. A regular cleaning (Prophylaxis) is sufficient.

4+

Periodontal Concern. Bacteria has migrated below the gumline. A Deep Cleaning (SRP) is medically necessary.

Why It Matters

Bacteria in deep pockets isn't just a dental issue. It’s a chronic infection. Leaving these areas untreated allows bacteria to enter the bloodstream, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes complications, and systemic inflammation.

Our Hygiene Modalities

We personalize our approach based on the current biological state of your gums.

Prophylaxis (Regular)

Preventative Maintenance

  • Removal of surface plaque and tartar.
  • Stain removal and high-gloss polishing.
  • Ideal for patients with healthy bone levels.
  • Performed every 6 months to maintain health.

Scaling & Root Planing

Periodontal Therapy

  • Sub-gingival removal of bacteria and tartar.
  • Smoothing of the root surface to help gums reattach.
  • Anesthesia used for total patient comfort.
  • Halts bone loss and prevents tooth mobility.

Hygiene FAQ

Common questions about maintaining your foundation.

Why can't I just have a 'regular' cleaning if I have gum disease?

A regular cleaning only reaches 1-3mm below the gumline. If you have deep pockets (4mm+), a regular cleaning leaves active infection behind, allowing bone loss to continue. It would be like cleaning the top of a carpet while ignoring the mold underneath.

Is a deep cleaning painful?

At Joyful Dental, we ensure you are completely comfortable. We use localized numbing agents so you won't feel the cleaning process. Most patients report feeling 'clean and refreshed' rather than sore afterward.

How often should I come in after a deep cleaning?

Patients who have had periodontal therapy usually move to 'Periodontal Maintenance' every 3-4 months. Bacteria repopulates every 90 days, so more frequent visits are needed to prevent the infection from returning.

Can gum disease be cured?

Gingivitis (early stage) is reversible. However, Periodontitis (bone loss) is managed rather than 'cured.' We can stop the progression and save your teeth, but consistent maintenance is key.
